weekend report

How has another weekend come and gone already?   I swear I feel like I just get a handle on all the details and preparation required and before I even 'fully participate and take it in' - it's gone.

I always sit through our Saturday night service so that if any adjustments needs to be made to the length of the service or something needs added we can do that for Sunday... as I walked down the back-hallway to speak with our interim pastor at the end of the final service, and heard applause in the auditorium,  I became overwhelmed with thankfulness to our faithful Crossroads attendees for encouraging the efforts of all involved in the services and support ministries of Crossroads.  Applause = thank you!

Even though there is a strong sense that we know 'who we are' and 'what we're about' - in this time of transition it could be possible if we take our eyes off of Him - that we could try to make the ministry about what we like - our personal preferences.   Instead it's perhaps more important than ever before to know who God's called us to be to our community and to the Body of Christ that worship here.

My hubby talked to a family this weekend that left Crossroads for a season to support another local pastor - they are back and their time away helped them to return fully committed to the importance of expository teaching and a strong direction in ministry.  It seems weekly the Lord provides at least one story of encouragement telling us that even in this transitional time - people recognize our commitment not to change directions, and to support the fact that the Lord moved Pastor Tim to a place He needed him more - AND that He also knows exactly who He needs at Crossroads now.

Our setlist:

Announcements on video:  We've been using younger people predominately on our video announcements - but, this weekend I asked tech guys to include one of my favorite 'older ladies', Nadine and she nailed it!  I got so many compliments about using her - she's a rock-star!

weekend report

Well, in 18 years of ministry I never thought this weekend would have to come.  But the Lord called our pastor away and this weekend was the celebration of all the things God has accomplished at Crossroads in those 18 years.   So sad to say goodbye - so good to remember what God has done - so sad to sing together one last time, watch videos together one last time and sit at the front of the auditorium together one last time…

But the thing that I continue to celebrate in my own soul is how well Pastor Tim and his family are leaving us.   I've never been part of a ministry where a pastor has left well!  It's encouraging, it makes me proud of them and gives me hope for the future!

weekend report

I decided after all the work to get ready for Easter to take a few days off.  So, I took off from writing too, but I just have to talk about Easter - it was wonderful and meaningful and had very special significance.

It was a weekend full of firsts and lasts.

It was the first Easter my son helped lead worship.
It was the first time I've ever cut an art performance, with the blessing of the artists,  from our Easter service the night of rehearsal.
It was the last time Crossroads will ever hear from Pastor Tim at an Easter service.

It was full of beautiful music and worship and a great teaching no one will soon forget!

Our setlist:

Heart of Courage - instrumental that ran during EP opening
Nothing But the Blood of Jesus - Kingdom
Christ is Risen
Heart of Courage - shortened instrumental with second EP words

my day off

I decided to write at the beginning of my day off instead of part way or all the way through it for a change.  As I write I see my yard outlined in snow with grass peeking through in the center of the yard.

I feel like that today.  When I woke up Crossroads was heavy on my heart.  I feel like we're peeking out of the greatest change our church has yet known, the loss of Pastor Tim and his family.

Sensing my struggle Vern emerged from the bedroom and crawled up beside me - some things never change!

I'm planning on spending some uninterrupted time today praying for our next pastor.  We need him.  We will be planning an all night prayer/scripture reading vigil at Crossroads soon, I may just camp out there for several days - this will be a really blessed time of prayer and our congregation coming together.

I'm praying that even now our next pastor senses an unrest in his spirit that prepares his heart to move from where he is, but that the transition is as healthy a transition as Pastor Tim's.  I pray we won't take a pastor who's church will fall apart with him gone.  That's actually a sign of a bad leader.

On the other hand, the fact that the day to day work and even tons of new events and opportunities are going to happen this summer with Pastor Tim gone is a testimony to good leadership!  Our congregation has carefully chosen an amazingly strong Elder board and we have a strong staff!  In addition to that our congregation is the most willing to serve and care for our ministry that I have ever seen!

Now all we have to do is go to the Lord with our request for the man He wants Crossroads to have.  (after all, He already has that man chosen!)  I can't think of a better way to spend 'my day off' than this. PLEASE set some dedicated time away from everything today and PRAY!

today's new things

Today held some new things.

Although severely distracted by the past few days, there was work to be done, meetings to attend, new plans to begin working on and an interview with our first summer intern!

The day began reviewing comments our congregation had made since Pastor Tim's resignation letter was sent out yesterday.  I have never been more proud of my church!  Despite the huge personal loss they feel,  everyone cares desperately about furthering the kingdom and the opportunity Pastor Tim will have to do just that in Akron,  and so the supportive comments were posted and shared and celebrated!

I left our meetings encouraged today, plans for the rest of the year and exciting new things.  One new thing is the launch of our summer college intern program.  I met with the first intern from Mt. Vernon Nazarene today.  She is a worship major and will serve on our praise team as well as worship in the Student Ministry department.  How exciting to bring in young college students to Crossroads!

Building into young Christian adults - providing valuable ministry experience to students as they finish their education and prepare to go out to churches to begin their ministry careers is very exciting to me!

Please pray with me as we move forward - here we go!

a time of change

Today my pastor announced his departure to our congregation.  Again I cried.

His departure is sad to me on many levels, and yet I ABSOLUTELY Rejoice with he and his family!

I am sad personally because I have been a friend of he and his family since we were kids in school.  He is younger than I so I've always felt as if he were my younger brother.

I remember hanging out with his sister in high school when he was a pesky little kid running around, and hanging upside-down in trees!

I remember his family throwing Ron and I a wedding shower.

I remember how proud his parents were of him and how they adored his wife Michelle.  I remember falling in love with his beautiful wife Michelle - she has become an irreplaceable friend for life.

I remember when he came back to town for his father's funeral - just as he was going into ministry.

I remember the crazy things we tried for God in the early years of Crossroads.

I remember how we all laughed about the fun and the failures of some of our ideas.

I remember how much I learned from him.

I remember how we celebrated new lives in Christ and first steps of maturity.

I remember how we cried as we launched amazing new projects and as our congregation rose to the challenge of rescuing our precious Cambodian orphans - far exceeding our imaginations.

And now I'll always remember this day - when he announced his calling away from us.  He's always been on my prayer list - and there he will remain with additional vigor praying the Lord will accomplish unbelievable things for eternity!  And waiting on the Lord to reveal who my next pastor will be.

Thank you Pastor Tim and Michelle!

A Message from my Pastor Tim Armstrong:

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”
Proverbs 16:9 ESV

When Michelle and I launched the church in 1996 our expectations were to remain here in Mansfield for the entirety of our ministry lives.  For the past eighteen years we have served with that assumption.  However, as Proverbs 16:9 states, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” So it is with a heavy heart that I write to tell you my time at Crossroads is drawing to an unexpected close.

After many months of prayer and diligently seeking the Lord’s will, we have become convinced that God is calling us to another ministry.  Let me assure you that our decision does not come from any discontent with the ministry, staff, leadership or you, the congregation of Crossroads.  We love you and the entire church body and consider you our family.  Our decision, albeit very difficult, is purely a response of obedience to follow the Lord’s calling.

Next month, following our Easter services, I will be candidating for the position of Senior Pastor at The Chapel in Akron, Ohio. We feel amazingly humbled to be asked to lead a church with such a rich history of proclaiming the Gospel to Ohio and the world.

I firmly believe that as the Lord is calling our family to Akron. He is at the same time preparing Crossroads for this time of transition.  We serve a sovereign and mighty God whose ways are often mysterious to us at the time but when ultimately revealed always prove to be the best for our growth and dependence upon Him.

Mike Sloan, the Elder Board Chairman, and the Crossroads leadership are already organizing to lead the church through this transition.  They are committed to finding a passionate teacher of God’s Word who will lead the church forward in its unchanging mission.  Mike and I will provide further details at the close of this next weekend’s service on March 15th and 16th.

I want to close by encouraging you in three ways.  First, let this time of change be the catalyst for deep and dependent prayer.  Pray for all aspects of Crossroads.  Pray for its next Senior Pastor.  Pray that God will use this in unimaginable ways to deepen and strengthen the faith of God’s people.  Second, do not fall to the temptations of fear, doubt and panic.  Those are emotions the enemy will use to splinter the church.  Remember, the Lord said, “I will build my church”  (Matthew 16:18).  Crossroads is centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and will continue to be so.  Third, anticipate great things.  This will be an exciting time as you wait on the Lord.  More than any other time, the church will need your support.  Continue to faithfully participate on Sunday, give generously and serve enthusiastically.

As you might imagine, this is an emotional time for our family, as we know it is for you.  We have been praying for you diligently and covet your prayers for us as well.

In Him,

Tim Armstrong
Senior Pastor, Crossroads Community Church

Worth writing about

As my day draws to an end, I ask myself if there was anything within my day worth writing about?

The definition of worth is "the quality that renders something desirable, useful or valuable"

Desirable?  Yes, many aspects of my day at least I considered desirable!
I held my grandson
I talked to my daughter via FaceTime
I watched my son sitting with high school students in the Crossroads service

Valuable? Yes, I learned truths from the first few verses of John taught expositorily by Pastor Tim!

Useful? Yes, I had the privilege of introducing a new worship intern to everyone tonight and began using her to help prepare the services!

Was my day worth writing about? Yes, because by putting it in words I  praise Him for giving me all these things, it was another day with loved ones and small things accomplished and time to appreciate all that I had in my day!

my day off

I actually have several days of vacation left so I am taking them this week before all the surgeries begin.

Before my day started I sat down to begin reading the scripture that Pastor Tim will base his next series on.  I wanted to refresh my memory with the passages so that I can prepare to focus on what's next after Christmas.

As I walked to my living room to read, I noticed how foggy it was outside.  My Christmas tree cast tiny sparkling lights on the window against a foggy backdrop.

One of the verses read, "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."

It just confounds me how often God gives me a physical example to support His Words when I focus and pay attention!

Despite the fog, the darkness - His son came - The light overcame the darkness….

I cannot wait for Pastor Tim to systematically teach us these truths after Christmas.

My day off started perfectly and I'm convinced I accomplished a ton because I gave Him my first moments - my best most focused moments!  Why I don't ALWAYS give Him first place in my life I have no idea !

He waits for me to reach out of this darkness - to reach toward the Light so that I follow Him through my days, not my own earthly agenda...

Crossroads' artists

Crossroads has an artist group.  They're kind of a quiet bunch.

But every once in a while they speak out, not usually with words but with the things they create.

This weekend at Crossroads the artists will speak at the Vessel Art Show.

The beginning process - painting the boards and boxes

Jen and James hanging the show in Town Square
So thankful for the wonderful talent at Crossroads!

Several of our beautiful art pieces.

The view from outside Crossroads.

Pastor Tim passed by the art show demonstrating superb balance on an Adopt A Child bicycle.

Please stop by anytime during the week when The Coffee House is open or during the weekend services and enjoy the show!

looking good on the outside

You may think by my title I am referring to something that physically looked good, not at all!

Tonight at Crossroads  we had a service that looked good, but for those of us involved behind the scenes it was anything but!

Don't get me wrong the Spirit was there as Pastor Tim presented a tremendous message and as people moved forward for prayer at the end of the service- it was a blessing.  But a wild scramble was happening backstage!

Our worship leader added a song earlier today that Pastor didn't know about, so he came up a song early which caused the band to leave the stage earlier than planned and the tech to scramble to get Pastor's sound up, EP screen changes and recordings started.  Our team ROCKS!!

And the way it went down was WAY better than what we had planned.

God is sovereign and in charge and amazing!  He knew how it needed to be and exactly how it would be, whether we planned it that way or not!

So blessed to be part of this team!

the lamb

Pastor Tim's continues his teaching this weekend on "The Lamb of God".

In my research I watched a video about the sacrifice of lambs as atonement for sin.  Further into the video it switched to shots of Christ as the one and only ultimate sacrifice.

I watched as soldiers beat him and nailed him to the cross and then stood back and laughed.  They laughed...

I was appalled when I pictured the 'real' soldiers in my mind laughing and throwing lots for his robe.

And then I remembered the times that I have watched or heard men I honestly thought were crazy due to their way out beliefs or horrible theological teachings. And I too have laughed at people I thought were surely false teachers. I remembered that they really did not know or believe He was the Son of God.  They thought HE was crazy.

Their eyes were blind.  They thought He was some crack pot making impossible claims and so they laughed.

Can you imagine their terror when the earth quaked and they heard a comrade say, "Surely this was the Son of God." The laughter ceased.

What did they tell their families when they went home from work that night?

And how did they ever sleep again?

I can't in my wildest dreams imagine living with that kind of guilt and shame.  They killed the Son of God.

And yet, our everyday sins require just as much of a savior as theirs.  The video still plays within my mind and I bow my head to praise and thank him for His endless forgiveness.

I know this Lamb of God, and can barely express the worship my heart feels.

what I learned today

I learned to let go - Savorn and Sony the Director's in Cambodia for Asia's Hope - said goodbye today.  Tears again...

These precious leaders have touched me deeply as I have previously talked about.  There is something so Supernaturally Authentic about the that I hang on every word they say and I care about everything they ask for - for the orphans.

This weekend God will move our congregation to a place we've never been.  With the brothers and sisters God has placed with me at Crossroads we will be obedient and follow His leading to help provide the way for these children to know the Lord and be equipped in every way to change Cambodia.

Please pray for Savorn this week, he is very nervous about passing his exams to be ordained as a Pastor while here in the states.  Such a man of God...

You can watch Savorn talk with Pastor Tim during last weekend's services by going to www.crossroadswired.com

2 weekend favorite things

I always have a couple favorite things from each weekend at Crossroads.

This weekend I LOVED the youth being up front leading us as well as the beginning of what I think will be one of our congregation's favorite series "Gray", Pastor Tim will unwrap I Corinthians and explain the freedom's we have in Christ.

Beyond those two things I loved these: The House Church Tower represents a new era at Crossroads as we begin to organize 5 new House Churches to launch this year!

The chocolate goodies...well they are just my favorite - no explanation needed!

the decorating pastor

SO...besides being the best teaching pastor in the world, Pastor Tim's hidden talent is decorating. We all think he should star in a new reality show about a Pastor who invades peoples offices and re-decorates everything around him!

If you give any indication that you are interested in changing an office around watch out!

I recently decided since getting a new laptop - to go desk-less and I love it. Tim was there shoving furniture around and making suggestions. I think I finally have it back together and I LOVE it!

He then returned to give his final examination on the scooter followed closely by his counterpart Deering! They finally left and peace returned to all!

assume too much

I am often guilty of assuming too much! I assume everyone else already knows all the pertinent details and go on my way wondering why no one is following. Good leaders instruct thoroughly.

I am trying to get better about putting first things first but I sometimes still move too fast, talk too fast and get there too fast, alone.

Today - prime example of assuming too much.

I was writing several birthday cards to our Crossroads College Small Group - I wrote extensively about how we have been praying for them this year at school, and then went into great detail about the Summer College Bible Study at Pastor Tim's house. On and on I wrote feeling really good about communicating with a college kid, wondering if this card would have any influence in getting him to attend the summer group. I re-read the card to make sure it made sense and reached for the envelope. Just as I was ready to tuck the card in, something caught my eye. I had just written a happy birthday message on a sympathy card! Can you imagine if this kid would have received this?? Chances of him attending the group would have been slim indeed!

I would encourage you all as I encourage myself, slow down, focus and do not assume too much!

full house

No I am not talking about a hand of cards! I am referring to our very full house tonight - full of young adults!

We are so blessed to part of their lives!

Crossroads summer college Bible study group begins next Wednesday with Pastor Tim.

The group is limited to college students between the ages of 18 - 25.

I am so excited for the young adults of Crossroads...it is going to be a really great summer!

weekend report

Our pastor was on vacation - but Pastor Wendell stepped in and completed the Amazing Jesus series with excellence! We used our new 'large' vocal team to do a little gospel and they were amazing!

As I walked around last night my heart was warmed by worship going on in our elementary classroom and I found Deering, one of the Director's observing the 4th and 5th grade classroom preparing to teach that age group today! So amazing how everyone around here just does whatever needs to be done to further the kingdom - so blessed to be a part of this staff! Definitely NOT just about what happens in the auditorium!

Our setlist:

This was our last weekend using original art as the background for our slides. They will be for sale on Sermonspice soon I hope!

Pre-worship: Who Can Satisfy (we pulled out some oldies! )
Pre-worship: Saved
Video announcements: We will be hosting Kay Warren from Saddleback next weekend - so Pastor Tim shot a video before he left on vacation.
