Christmas began this week

While people are still scrambling to get kids settled into the routine of school, and fall sports and all the rush that comes with this time of year, bits and pieces of Christmas began to come together at Crossroads this week.

Some bits were a result of generous volunteers working to cut all the pieces and parts out ahead of time so that individual hand-made gift tags can go on each gift given out at our Adopt A Child event this year.  People gathered in Town Square early this week to assemble 250 of the needed 1,000 gift cards.  The next opportunity to help us prepare for Christmas will be, October 12th when we once again gather to try to finish the tags.
My most personal bits were the pieces of the Crossroads Christmas services.  For a long time I've been focused on one idea for our services that just was not coming together and I ended up staring at a blank screen for long periods of time, despite prayer and preparation.  I even spent countless time searching for a DVD I couldn't find, only to find it exactly where it should have been...sigh.

I had the pieces and parts saved in folders, segments I had researched and considered for a very long time.  But, when it came time to create the skeleton of the service to be handed off to the rest of the creatives to join me in completing - it just wasn't cohesive.  And so one can assume - not God's will.

I asked my daughter to let me bounce some of the main pieces and ideas off of her and she immediately could see the value in the main ones, but helped bring perspective and order to the remaining pieces and parts. And the next day we got the biggest assurance we could possibly have received.

My plan was to present Christmas to the creative team and then talk to Pastor Dave, upon his request.  But instead, we asked him if we could have a few minutes of his time and then we knew for sure it was right.  As we began to show him some pieces and read him some of the content - he walked to his computer to show us where God had directed him the night before. To a passage in Micah that used several of the very words we read to him in our concept.... we all just looked at each other in disbelief!

As I left that room, I thanked God for caring enough about our little plans to give His confirmation in such an obvious way, and so the pieces began to actually fit together and fall into place.  We have a long way to go, but, will proceed with confidence that we will once again get to tell His story to all that gather at Crossroads and will trust Him to change lives for eternity!
What a week it was - Christmas, here we come!

the church

Today I got to watch 'the church', the real church as God intended.
The volunteers praying before beginning

Our GoMissions team has worked under the leadership of my precious friend Darlene, and organized the distribution of
the gifts that our congregational members had contributed for the neediest families in Richland County.  It was definitely a blessing to witness.

People sat and prayed and discussed their lives with Crossroads volunteers and I saw more tears of joy in one day's time then I've seen in years.  One lady said she had just told her children there would be no Christmas this year, but that she would try to take them shopping as soon as the holidays were over and she saved up some money by working overtime at the gas station.  Her husband had left her and she was trying to keep the family together.

She was overcome with tears of joy as she watched the volunteers bring her children's gifts to the table where they sat.  They then prayed together and after sitting for nearly an hour talking, she made her way back home to her tiny house and 3 kids and unknown future.

The circumstances that were shared with our volunteers are stories that bring perspective to our own lives.  Days we feel sad or disappointed usually have no foundation when measured against the hopelessness of those we served today.

The Lord permitted us to serve people today that society considers less fortunate, but I don't know...  Sometimes those who have too much, who never have to wonder about having enough or the ones slighted I imagine.

I have to be very honest and say there are seldom times in my life that I've worried about going without something, and today I saw people that spend their lives feeling hopeless.  They needed help, and somehow the Lord allowed the people of Crossroads to fill that need.

As always with this event, we are the ones blessed the most.  Such a privilege!

amazing generousity

I am overcome by the visual of our auditorium being completely covered with gifts for 800 of Richland Counties neediest children! Breath taking! Once again, our Adopt A Child leaders have just outdone themselves in one of the most excellent events of its kind in the area!

Any of you Crossroadians that are not able to help with the distribution are missing a HUGE blessing! You really should just stop in and take a look!

I am anxious to finish my tasks and get back to the church to join in the fun of watching God's people work together to bring joy to our community! So good!!

weekend report

Tough weekend - but I feel God was honored and God was worshiped!

AND Christmas was officially launched today at Crossroads - the pictures show our amazing Go Missions team creating the 800 Adopt-A-Child gift tags that begin to go out next weekend!

This has been such a great opportunity for our congregation. We started partnering with a local established organization in our area that makes sure the identified neediest children in our area receive a bag full of gifts each year. And now just a few short years later we have the privilege of hosting them at Crossroads this year where we will distribute with their volunteers and ours - the entire 800 Adopt-A-Child gifts! So exciting! I LOVE the concept of not trying to dream up our own local mission events when opportunities already exist. This can bring the church alive in your community!

Our setlist:

Opening special -
Announcements: we used our Stewardship Pastor Wendell and his lovely wife Madeline for announcements since we are currently in a Marriage series.
Worship: I Exalt Thee - Jesus Culture
Worship: More Than Enough - Tomlin
Praise: Short portion of Our God - Tomlin
Praise: Free To Run
Message: Re-Think Marriage: Pt. 2 Sex - Pastor Tim Armstrong
Exit song: More Than Enough

Adopt A Child

Our congregation has adopted 600 of the communities' neediest children for Christmas through an event we call Adopt A Child! To watch the joy of everyone bringing in their gifts is amazing! Next week we give them out - cannot wait.

This Radio Flyer is one of my favorite things so far!

I want to thank Darlene Rudrick and her amazing team of volunteers that work for weeks to organize this event! God bless you all!

my day off

I had a good morning at home writing Christmas Cards and chillin', then the action began.

I hit 5 stores trying to find a Jigsaw blade that I am not sure even exists! Maybe the artists are just messing with me...anyway the search yielded nothing except that I now know more than I ever wanted to about how many different types of blades there are!

Tonight as we worked on the Christmas set design we saw the Adopt A Child team working to prepare for the event that will soon provide Christmas for 600 of our communities neediest kids. Quite a few women were in the building attending the Beth Moore Bible Study too!

I love being at our ministry at night when different small groups or ministry teams are working. No one sees their night time meetings, but, it is these quiet, behind the scene efforts that help connect people to the ministry and to one another.

Christmas is coming quickly...we are working hard to be ready and loving it!
